Barhaspatya sutras

The Barhaspati Sutras, also Lokayata ( " materialistic ", " atheistic " ) sutras were the basic text of the Indian philosophical school called Charvaka.

The texts probably date back to the Mauryan period 320-180 BC They were lost and have survived only in fragmentary quotations. Dakshinaranjan Shastri published in 1928 sixty of such verses. In 1959, he published 54 selected verses as Barhaspatya Sutra. He believed a lot more fragments could be found. R. Bhattacharya tried a new reconstruction in 2002. His conclusion was that the probability of incorrect citations increases with the verses you list.

Most quotes can be found in Indian works of the 8th to 12th century. The book Sarvadarshanasamgraha of Sayana from the 14th century contains a detailed treatment of Charvaka without quotes from the perspective of a follower of Vedanta.

A text called Bārhaspatya sûtram arthāt Bārhaspatya Arthaśāstram is an obvious fake (ed. Frederick W. Thomas 1921).
