Bari (Somalia)

Puntland Puntland

Bari ( in Somali: Bari to German " East"; Arabic: باري Bari) is a region ( Somali: Gobolka ) in northeastern Somalia, with about 571,000 inhabitants. The capital is Boosaaso, a coastal town in the northwest.

Bari is located on the Horn of Africa to the Cape Guardafui in the Northeast. In the north of Bari bordering the Gulf of Aden, on the east by the Indian Ocean. The neighboring regions of Sanaag and Sool are in the west, the south is Nugaal.

Since its inception, the region is claimed by the de facto autonomous state of Puntland part and managed. In its administrative structure of Puntland, however, only the northern half of the region is known as Bari. The southern part is now the autonomous region Karkaar with Qardho as its capital.

Previously, the inhabitants lived mainly from fishing. This is also the reason why several cities are on the coast, as Bargaal, Qandala, Bender Siyaada, Aluula, Hafun and Bandarbeyla. Inland, on the Sool plateau are Qardho and Iskushuban.

The region is largely controlled by the Somali clan of Majeerteen, a Subclan the Darod. From the mid- 18th to late 19th century were here Sultanate of Majeerteen.

Administrative divisions

Somalia

In the administrative structure of Somalia under Siad Barre until 1991, before the start of the Somali civil war, the Bari region was divided into the following districts:

  • Aluula district, Aluula
  • Bandarbeyla District, Bandarbeyla
  • Boosaaso District, Boosaaso
  • Iskushuban District, Iskushuban
  • Qandala District, Qandala
  • Qardho district, Qardho

After the collapse of the central government administration units have become more and more dissolved into the chaos of war. Although the transitional government of Somalia has always upheld the classification which existed before the war. But this had little real political implications.

Puntland

In the administrative structure of Puntland Bari is divided into the following districts:

  • Aluula district, Aluula
  • Armo district, Armo
  • Bargaal District, Bargaal
  • Boosaaso district, Boosaaso
  • Iskushuban district, Iskushuban
  • Qandala district, Qandala
  • Ufayn District, Ufayn

The districts Bandarbeyla district and Qardho district in the south belong to the region Karkaar.

These structures are not yet well established. Again and again, call local clan leaders to resist or to establish new autonomous constituent states. So Karkaar is partially no longer understood as a region of Puntland, but as autonomous, as already Ras Caseyr in the north, which was proclaimed as in the field of district Aluula.
