Barletta

Barletta is a city with 94 681 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) of the Italian province of Barletta -Andria -Trani, Apulia.

Location and data

The city covers an area of 146 km ². Economically, the sea salt extraction, paper, chemical and cement industry is significant.

The neighboring municipalities are Andria, Canosa di Puglia, Margherita di Savoia (FG ), San Ferdinando di Puglia ( FG), and Trani Trinitapoli (FG).

History

Barletta was founded in the 3rd century BC under the name Bardulos. In the Middle Ages the city was a Norman fortress and reached under the dynasty of Anjou- Plantagenet their heyday. In 1503, an Italian- French confrontation took place here that has become known as Disfida di Barletta. During the Second World War, the city was the site of the first action of the Resistance, the Italian resistance to National Socialism. Since 2008, Barletta is one of the three capitals of the newly established province of Barletta -Andria -Trani

Attractions

Worth seeing are the cathedral from the 12th to 14th century, a castle of the Hohenstaufen in the 13th and 16th centuries, the so-called Colossus of Barletta, a bronze statue of a Roman emperor from the 5th century. In the southwest of the city lies the battlefield of Cannae.
