Barmou

Region

Barmou is a rural municipality in the department of Tahoua in Niger.

Geography

Barmou lies in the Sahel. The neighboring municipalities are Kao in the north, Kalfou in the east, the south and Tahoua Affala in the West. The municipality is divided into 20 administrative villages, 18 traditional villages, 23 hamlets and a water source. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village Barmou.

History

The rural community Barmou was separated as an independent administrative unit in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the northwestern part of the canton Kalfou.

Population

At the 2001 census Barmou had 34 987 inhabitants. For the year 2010 47.147 inhabitants were calculated.

Policy

In the local elections in July 2004 Abdoulkarim Hamidou ( PNDS - Tarayya ) was elected mayor.

Economy and infrastructure

The municipality is located in a zone is operated in the Agropastoralismus. The weekly market of Barmou benefits from its location between the residential areas of the sedentary and the nomadic population. It is the largest cattle fair in the country, even before that in Zinder. The Wodaabe nomads serves the market of Barmou to a supply of household goods, materials, foods and spices.
