Barnard College

Barnard College, founded in 1889, is an independent college of the liberal arts ( Liberal Arts ) and Science for Women in Manhattan, New York City, USA. Although it is in a relationship with Columbia University, Barnard has its own campus, faculty, administration, board, budget and funding. The college is located on the 1.6- acre campus between the 116 - 120th Streets West Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan since 1898.

The college is to Frederick A. P. Barnard ( 1809-89 ), an American teacher and mathematician named the 1864-89 as president of Columbia College ( such as the University was then called ) was used. He has campaigned for equal access of women to education and even preferred for the joint education.

History

At its inception, the College was in a rented terraced house, 343 Madison Avenue, where six high school teachers 14 ordinary students, as well as 22 "Special " ( specials ) where proof of sufficient knowledge of Greek was missing, and therefore were only allowed to study natural science, taught. Only two years after the move to Morningside Heights, ie in 1900, Barnard has been incorporated into the system of Columbia University. However, it maintained its independent line, his students were given access to education, the library and the academic degrees from Columbia University.
