Barnett Rosenberg

Barnett Rosenberg ( born November 16, 1926 in New York City; † August 8, 2009 in Lansing Michigan ) was an American chemist.

Rosenberg studied at Brooklyn College (Bachelor 1948) and in 1956 received his doctorate at New York University in physics. From 1961 he was at Michigan State University, where he became professor emeritus in 1997.

In 1961 he discovered by chance in an experiment in which he exposed bacteria to an electric field that this is no longer divided. He did not find the cause in the electric field, but in platinum from its electrodes. In 1969, he then discovered that they prevented cell division even in tumors. With colleagues, he developed the anti -cancer drug cisplatin, which was established in 1978 approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

In 1984 he was awarded the Kettering Prize and in 1985 he received the Harvey Prize.
