Barney Dreyfuss

Barney Dreyfuss ( born February 23, 1865 in Freiburg im Breisgau as Dreyfuss Bernhard, † February 5, 1932 in New York, NY) was an American entrepreneur and baseball pioneer of German origin.

His parents were Samuel Dreyfuss (* July 7, 1832; † September 18, 1896 Freiburg im Breisgau) and Fanny Goldschmidt ( dates unknown ).

After a banking apprenticeship in Karlsruhe, he emigrated in 1883 before the upcoming draft for military service in the U.S. and changed his name to Barney. He lived in Paducah, Kentucky, in about his grandfather Leon Bernheim related with him family Bernheim. He worked in the whiskey distillery " Bernheim Brothers & Uri ". Later, he was their partner. The distillery and the families they relocated in 1888 to Louisville (Kentucky), as Paducah had become too small for the size of the company.

Barney Dreyfuss was extremely successful as a businessman and was considered unscrupulous. He was a pioneer of professional baseball, and is considered the inventor of the " World Series " in the U.S. baseball. From 1900 to 1932 he was the owner of the baseball club Pittsburgh Pirates. 2008 he was inducted posthumously into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
