. Barnim X, according to other Census Barnim XII (* February 15, 1549 in Wolgast, † September 1, 1603 in Stettin) was a Duke of Pomerania from the grasping house. He managed first from 1569, the Office Rügenwalde. From 1600 until his death he reigned in Pomerania -Stettin.

Life

Barnim was born the sixth child of Duke Philip I of Pomerania - Wolgast and his wife Maria of Saxony. On the death of Philip in 1560, survived him five of his sons, in addition to Barnim his older brothers Johann Friedrich ( * 1542), Bogislaw XIII. (* 1544) and Ernst Ludwig ( * 1545 ) and Barnim younger brother Casimir VI. (* 1557). For all the brothers initially a regency was created. It consisted of the marshal, Ulrich von Schwerin as regent and a regency council of eleven people.

Barnim studied together with his brother Ernst Ludwig from 1563 at the University of Wittenberg, where they at the home of Martin Luther, the son of the reformer Martin Luther, lived to 1565. In Wittenberg, he was also in the summer semester 1564 rector of the Alma Mater

1569 there was a reorganization of the government in Pomerania. Duke Barnim IX. of Pomerania -Stettin, who had no surviving sons, renounced in favor of Johann Friedrich and Barnim X, his great-nephew, on the government. Barnim X again waived the co-regency and was put up by his brother with the Office Rügenwalde. Final distribution of government in Pomerania in the Treaty of Jasenitz 25 July 1569 regulated.

Also in 1569 a marriage Barnim with a Polish princess was planned, but did not materialize. In Rügenwalde Barnim reigned since 1569 in a quiet seclusion and with judicious economy. In 1581 he married Anna Maria von Brandenburg, daughter of Elector Johann Georg of Brandenburg. The marriage produced no children were born.

After the death of John Frederick in 1600 Barnim followed him into the government in Pomerania -Stettin. But it was only in 1602, he moved from Rügenwalde in the residence city of Szczecin. In Rügenwalde was succeeded by his younger brother Casimir VI. in the rule.

At the government Pomerania -Stettin Barnim had little joy. Johann Friedrich had lived beyond his means, leaving considerable debt and pledged offices. Barnim excited now by his frugality often indignation. On September 1, 1603 he died in Stettin and was buried in the Castle Church in Szczecin. He left no children.

In the government in Pomerania -Stettin had to Barnim his younger brother Casimir VI. to follow. However, this renounced in favor of his older brother Bogislaw XIII. , In turn, began his son Philip II as governor. Barnim widow Anna Maria died in 1618 in her widow's residence in Wollin.

Count

The counting of the ruler of the Griffin house is involved ever since. From time immemorial, there is here an inequality, which causes some confusion. The modern census of Barnim as Barnim X. arises if one counts only the members of the Griffin house, who have reached the age of manhood. If you count the other hand, also as a child with the deceased, the result is the count as Barnim XII. , Which was common in the older literature.
