Barnitz, Germany

Barnitz ( Low German Barns) is a municipality in the district of Stormarn in Schleswig-Holstein. The community is located east of Bad Oldesloe and consists of the villages Benstaben, United Barnitz, Small Barnitz and Lokfeld.

Geography

The villages of the municipality is situated along the river Trave in a picturesque river valley. This landscape was designed in the late ice age as a reason or terminal moraine, where soil material has broken down after the snow melts, which have pushed before them the glaciers. History

The municipality was created in 1970 as a merger of the previously independent municipalities United Barnitz, Small Barnitz and Lokfeld. In 1938, this merger was planned, but failed. On 1 January 1978, the neighboring Benstaben was incorporated.

The place name is probably Wendish, ie westslawischer origin. The meaning is not entirely clear. On the one hand, the name might refer to the foundation by a ' Berislav ' as a local founder, but more likely is the derivation of the name from the description of local conditions. Literally translated into High German means ' Barnitz ' even so much as ' Birch Au', which indicates a passed with birch river valley. Benstaben

Benstaben was first mentioned in 1263. There was then a part of Lübeck cathedral chapter. Great Barnitz

Great Barnitz was founded in 1200 under the German East settlement. Small Barnitz

Small Barnitz was first mentioned in 1170 as Bernice and was a founding Wendish. In 1233 it came as a gift to the cathedral chapter of Lübeck. Since 1571 Klein Barnitz was Lutheran. Lokfeld

Lokfeld was first mentioned in documents in 1189. The village includes a village with 40 houses and four settlements in the courts ' Heckkaten '. The Federal Highway 1 from Hamburg to Lübeck strips the municipality between Benstaben and small Barnitz, next driveway is Reinfeld ( 3 km). The nearest railway station is also in Reinfeld. Culture and sights
