Baron Baltimore

Baron Baltimore (Informal Lord Baltimore ) is a now extinct hereditary title of nobility of the Peerage of Ireland.

History

King James I created the named after the estate of Baltimore Manor in County Longford title in 1625 and awarded him in recognition of loyal service, his Secretary of State George Calvert. Calvert had previously forced to resign from his post because he had converted to the Roman Catholic Church. The title was subsequently transferred to the oldest of the Calvert - sons and extinguished with the death of the sixth Baron Baltimore in the year 1771st

A special role is played by the Lords Baltimore in American history as the owner and Palatine ( Palatine Lord ) of the colony of Maryland. George Calvert, who had applied for the charter for the establishment of the colony, died shortly before its issue in 1632. In American historiography is with Lord Baltimore usually his son Cecil Calvert meant. After the first two honorees also named Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland today.
