Baron Cromwell

Baron Cromwell is a British hereditary title of nobility, which was created in the Peerage of England repeated. He is now guided by the family Bewicke - Copley.

Ceremonies

The title was first created in 1308 for John de Cromwell. He went out already in 1335 with his death.

The second award was presented in 1375 to Ralph de Cromwell. As with many ancient baronies of the Peerage of England, as well as the aforementioned ceremony, the creation was not by appointment of a person to Peer ( letters patent ), but by the fact that the person was asked to take a seat in the upper house ( writ of summons ). A special feature of these baronies by writ is that they can also be inherited in the female line, if no children are present. However applies between several sisters - unlike brothers - not the principle of primogeniture. Since the title can not be shared or held in common but the title then rests ( falls into abeyance ), if no sons but several daughters are present. Everyone can then jointly entitled to request the termination of the suspension at the crown. The Barony rested from 1497 up to 1923.

1461, which rested above Barony, the title was created again in this case for Sir Humphrey Bourchier. This Barony by writ went out but ten years later, when he died, leaving no offspring.

Since it was assumed that no heir would be able to be found in 1536, the English statesman Thomas Cromwell was invested with the title. Shortly before his execution, four years later it was this title, as well as the few months earlier awarded title of Earl of Essex, revoked.

The last award was made in 1540 to Thomas Cromwell's son Gregory. This title became extinct in 1687 with the title of Earl of Ardglass.
