Baron Napier of Magdala

Baron Napier of Magdala in Abyssinia and in the County Palatine of Caryngton of Chester, is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, named after the family Napier.

Award

The title was created in 1868 for the colonial officer Robert Cornelis Napier. He had already distinguished itself in several colonial wars, when he was appointed commander of the British expedition of 1868 Ethiopia. In the Battle of Magdala he defeated the Emperor Theodore II of Ethiopia.

Napier later became commander of the British Indian Army and Governor of Gibraltar. In 1882 he was promoted to field marshal.
