Baroque in Brazil

The Baroque style was introduced in the early 17th century by Catholic missionaries, especially the Jesuits in Brazil. They brought the new style as a tool of their Christian faith. Prosopopéia (1601 ), an epic poem by Bento Teixeira, is considered the first Baroque works in the Brazilian literature. Be outstanding in the field of visual arts, the sculptures of Aleijadinho and the painting of Master Ataíde apply.

On the field, the architecture of the Baroque was particularly in the north- east of the country, especially there in Salvador, to flower, but also in the central states, there are great examples, as in Minas Gerais, Goiás and Rio de Janeiro. In contrast to the art forms just mentioned, very beautiful works of the late Baroque emerged in the musical field only a few, however. With the advent of Neoclassicism since the first decades of the 19th century came the Baroque, which was previously regarded as the national style par excellence, increasingly out of fashion. Despite all of his stylistic influences in Brazil can make up in the first years of the 20th century.
