Barakpur ( Bengali: বারাকপুর, Barakpur, English: Barrackpore ) is a town in the Indian state of West Bengal with a population of about 154,000 ( 2011 census ).

Location

Barakpur is located north of Kolkata, in the district of North 24 Parganas at Hugli and is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Kolkata. The city has an average elevation of 15 meters above sea level.

History

The name probably derives Barakpur from the English word " barrack " (Eng.: Barracks ) from. The city was given this name because it was one of the first major military bases of the British East India Company in the east of the Indian subcontinent. The first military operations in the region was built in 1772. Before this time Barakpur was called Chanak. It is variously also stated that that Barakpur a center was already during the Mughal rule under the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, in which the traditional control " khajna " was collected and that the city had been named at this time Barbakpur. The city was the center of two uprisings against British rule. 1824 came here under the Sepoy Binda Tiwari for the first uprising. 1857 rebelled the Sepoy Mangal Pandey against British commands, injuring difficult two British officers.
