Barrafranca

Barra Franca is a municipality in the province of Enna in Sicily region of Italy with 13,851 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Barrafranca located 39 km southwest of Enna. The city lies on the SS 191, which connects Piazza Armerina with Caltanissetta. The municipality covers an area of ​​53.64 km ². The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture. It will mainly produces grapes, olives, nuts and almonds.

The neighboring municipalities are Mazzarino (CL ), Piazza Armerina (EN), Pietraperzia (EN), and Riesi (CL).

History

Probably this was the ancient Hibla Heraia or Galeota or gala Tina, which was then Romanized and was named Collanania. To Norman times it was known as Convincino; in 1330 he came to the fief of the Barresi family. About two hundred years later was Matteo Barresi di Pietraperzia work carried out to promote the development of the town and gave it its still existing name Barra Franca.
