Barreiros (manufacturer)

Barreiros was a Spanish industrial company that was founded by Eduardo Barreiros. The main area of business was the production of engines and bodies for trucks and tractors.

1945 bought Eduardo Barreiros a bus line that had possessed his father in Ourense (Galicia ). He then founded the company Barreiros Empresa Constructora, SA ( BECOSA ). In the province of Orense, he established contacts with the Public Roads Administration, for which he fabricated parts and items for road construction. In the following years, he decided to convert gasoline engines to diesel engines, which gave him a secure economic and financial base to start 1954 Barreiros Diesel with a capital of 10 million pesetas. There he produced a daily average of three units of the EB -6 engine with the Barreiros technology (for use in trucks 5-7 tons). He earned an area of 20,000 m² initially in Villaverde, near Madrid. There he founded the company Compania Anonima de Bombas, SA ( CABSA ) to produce injection pumps and electrical equipment.

In subsequent years, Barreiros produced there dynamos, starters and regulators. Then he also generators, welders and electric brakes for trucks forth. At that time made Barreiros tractors under license by Hanomag.

1957 Barreiros won a competition in Portugal for a tender of 300 trucks for the Portuguese army against British, American and French competitors. This front hood truck with a total weight of 5 tons already had a four-wheel drive and was under the name " El abuelo " ( = grandfather ) offered.

1962 Barreiros allied with Chrysler to produce cars from Dodge and Simca. This Barreiros offered one for the in those years little motorized Spain astonishingly large model range: in addition to the known as Simca 1000 in Germany rear-engine model that was 900 Special with 950 cc offered in Spain under the name Simca, offered Barreiros known as Simca 1100 Frontantriebler with an originally only in Spain Barreiros offered 1200cc to engine. In addition Barreiros still had a Dodge, in which a plant 's own 3.7- liter engine for the drive made . Since 1973, this Spanish Dodge was offered in Switzerland. For Spanish taxi operators Barreiros still offered a variant of the Dodge Barreiros with a diesel engine, which, however, had less ride comfort and refinement than the original gasoline model.

In the following years the brand reached unknown sales figures, which were connected with a turnover of 7 billion pesetas in that era. The company NAZAR in Saragossa was taken, in which the majority of the production elements for road construction machinery, tractors and buses was concentrated. A pioneering company for car finance was founded with a capital of 100 million pesetas with a participation of 60 % by Barreiros.

1967 Chrysler acquired the majority of the corporation, but left it in the beginning nor the Barreiros family continues the line. By 1969, Chrysler had its share further increased. Barreiros lost its influence in the company. This year, Chrysler absorbed its Spanish subsidiary completely.

Barreiros continued to produce solid diesel engines, trucks and buses. Limbs and articulated lorries were in Spain until the 1980s virtually unknown. But as the Spanish competitor Pegaso decreed Barreiros a heavy Cabover model, a four-axle, the two front axles were already drawn and was offered both as a flatbed, and as a tipper. The vehicles and engines were so fundamentally sound made that it is still possible to find trucks and tractors of the brand Barreiros in Spain.

As the Group Chrysler in 1978 was in economic difficulties, he sold his entire European activities on the Peugeot Group. The truck brand Barreiros Diesel SA was integrated into the Renault group and disappeared with it permanently.

Although Barreiros to improve the diesel engine technology, as well as many vehicle elements of heavy machinery contributed much, he did not get the deserved recognition for his work. In the 1980s, Barreiros, who no longer had his own business for several years competed, with its own modern diesel engine design in a competition in Cuba, he won the register under the supervision of the British Lloyd's.
