The Barrhorn is a three-thousand in the Pennine Alps on the western side of the Matter. It is located 6 km north of the White Horn ( 4505 m) and vis -à-vis the dome ( 4545 m). Its maximum altitude is 3610 m, the peak area is glaciated. From the summit you have a good view of the White Horn, the cathedral, the Monte Rosa and the Aletsch Glacier.

The summit is accessible without mountaineering equipment and is considered the " highest mountain hiking mountain in Europe " (see links). The summit of located on the French-Italian border Grande Sassière is with 3751 m, however, still higher and is more easily accessible from the road up to Val d'Isere.

Routes

The closest villages near the Barrhorns are St. Niklaus in the Matter and pits / Avoid in Turtmanntal. The normal rise of the Turtmannhütte ( 2519 m) ​​takes three to four hours. The cottage itself is reachable in two to three hours of pits from. The road to the cabin corresponds to the level of difficulty depending on the choice T1 to T2 , the other way to Barrhorn is T3.

The rise of St. Niklaus via the Topalihütte ( 2674 m) and the Schölligletscher. Above the Schölligletschers leads the way on a via ferrata, in part, it has a fixed steel cable as a backup ( Difficulty T4). According to a hiking guide the Schöllijoch is a T5 - road with a steep snow slope, ropes and iron steps. The current state of Schölligletschers should be obtained from the warden. St. Niklaus - Topalihütte depending on the way 4.5 to 6 hours, Topalihütte - Barrhorn about 6 hours.
