New South Wales

The Barrier Highway branches off in Nyngan on Mitchell Highway (R32 / R71 ) to the west. After 131 km it reaches the town of Cobar, which is known for the most important Aboriginal rock art in the whole of New South Wales. More than 1,300 rock paintings are located in the area around Mount Grenfell, about 40 km north- west of the city. North of Cobar is a large copper and zinc mine.

242 km west of Cobar meets the Barrier Highway to the coming from the South Cobb Highway ( R75 ) and achieved together with him 19 km further north the town of Wilcannia, where he crossed the Darling River.

A further 200 km to the west-southwest with Broken Hill reached the last town on the highway in New South Wales. She is known as the Capital of the Outback and as a station of the Indian Pacific. Broken Hill is the only city in New South Wales, in which the Australian Central Standard Time is considered, which is otherwise used only in South Australia and the Northern Territory. There, the now world- largest mining company BHP Billiton was founded. In the town of Silver City Highway ( B79 ) the Barrier Highway crosses in a north-south direction. 50 km west-southwest of Broken Hill reached the Barrier Highway, the border with South Australia.

South Australia

In South Australia, the Barrier Highway runs in a wide arc in a southwesterly direction towards the capital Adelaide.

He leads through vast, sparsely populated areas before it reaches Burra with the first major village. Burra is an old mining town, which is a large open-air museum of mining today. Today the town is the center of an agriculturally important region and 1988 Burra the title Merino Capital of the World was officially awarded.

About 70 km further south in the town of Giles Corner meets the Barrier Highway to the Main North Road ( A32 / B82 ) and ends. The Main North Road continues south to the center of Adelaide.
