Barrington Moore Jr.

Barrington Moore Jr. ( born May 12, 1913 † 21 October 2005) was an American sociologist, historian and political scientist.

In his major work on the origins of democracy or dictatorship in the modern era, he tried to understand how this choice has been made in selected companies typical of this design. What were the developments to democracy, fascist or communist regimes dependent? He looked at specifically the ways in which modern and pre-modern relations of power to industrialization and modernization of the respective agricultural economies and led to the emergence of certain of these forms of government.

Moore had worked as a political analyst for the U.S. government and the OSS during World War II. From 1945 he taught in Chicago and Harvard sociology, from 1951 until his retirement he worked at the Russian Research Center at Harvard University, his first publications were devoted to the Soviet Union. In 1958 he published a book of essays that questioned the methodology of the former American sociology in question.

Barrington Moore was a lifelong friend of an old supervisor with the OSS, Herbert Marcuse.
