Barry Cooper (musicologist)

Barry Cooper ( born 1949 in Westcliff -on-Sea, Essex ) is an English musicologist.

Life

Cooper studied musicology and organ in Oxford, received the Master in 1973 and his doctorate in 1974. According to a lectureship at the University of St Andrews he went to the University of Aberdeen. Since 1990 he is professor at the University of Manchester.

His research interests include the English Baroque music and Ludwig van Beethoven. He is the editor and author of the Beethoven Compendium (1991). This standard work of Beethoven research has now been translated into French, German and Japanese.

Caused a sensation in the world premiere of his reconstruction of the first movement of the 10th symphony by Beethoven at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 1988 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Walter Weller. Even the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Wyn Morris has recorded since the Beethoven fragment.

In addition, he has long lost the slow movement of Beethoven's String Quartet in G major, Op 18 No 2 reconstructed, the Quatuor Danel which brought in September 2011 in Manchester for the world premiere.

Cooper has rediscovered French harpsichord music of the 17th century.
