Barry County (Michigan)

Barry County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hastings.

Geography

The County is located in the central northwestern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is in the west about 60 km from Lake Michigan, one of the five great lakes, distance and has an area of 1494 square kilometers, of which 54 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Ionia County, Eaton County, Calhoun County, Kalamazoo County, Allegan County and Kent County.

History

Barry County was formed in 1829 as an original county of free territory. It was named after William T. Barry, a U.S. Postmaster General. The county is one of the so-called Cabinet counties since it was like some other named after a member of the cabinet of U.S. President Andrew Jackson.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Barry County 56 755 people in 21,035 households and 15,986 families. The population density was 39 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.39 percent White, 0.24 percent African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.50 percent from other races groups; 1.12 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.46 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 21,035 households out of which 35.2 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 64.1 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers and 24.0 percent were non-families. 19.5 percent of all households and 7.7 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.06.

27.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.5 percent 18 to 24 years 29.0 percent between 25 and 44, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 11.8 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.8 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 46,820, and the median income for a family $ 51,794. Males had a median income of $ 38,991, women $ 26,387. The per capita income was $ 20,636. 3.9 percent of families and 5.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
