Barry Cunliffe

Sir Barrington Windsor Cunliffe CBE, known as Barry Cunliffe ( born December 10, 1939) is a British archaeologist.

Life

After Cunliffe had studied archeology and anthropology at Cambridge University, he was a lecturer at the University of Bristol in 1963. In 1966, he was unusually young, professor of archeology at the University of Southampton. From 1972 to 2007 he was Professor of European Archaeology at the University of Oxford.

Very well known are his excavations of the Roman Palace of Fishbourne, Sussex. In addition, he is a recognized authority in the field of Celtic research.

From 1976 to 1979 he was president of the Council for British Archaeology. He is since 1984 member of the " Ancient Monuments Advisory Committee" ( English Heritage ) and since 1991 a member of the " Advisory Committee of the Discovery Programme ( Ireland) ". In June 2006 he was knighted.
