Barry Tuckwell

Barry Tuckwell ( born March 5, 1931 in Melbourne, Australia) is an Australian horn player and conductor.

Life and work

With 15 years Tuckwell began his orchestral career in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. From 1955 to 1968 he was principal horn of the London Symphony Orchestra, then he started his solo career. In 1982 he founded the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and conducted it as a conductor until 1998, in addition he worked as a conductor of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (Australia) and directed numerous master classes.

From 1962 to 1972 he was professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, the University of Sydney awarded him an honorary doctorate. He was the first president of the International Horn Society. From Tuckwell are more than 45 recordings. In addition, more than 20 works by contemporary composers for Tuckwell were written.
