Barry Wordsworth

Barry Wordsworth ( born February 20, 1948 in Worcester Park, Surrey ) is an English conductor.

1973 Barry Wordsworth second conductor of the orchestra's tour of the Royal Ballet in 1974 and chief conductor of Sadler 's Wells Royal Ballet. In 1987 he gave up this post in order to conduct orchestral music, but remained an official guest conductor of the Company.

From 1989 to 2006 Wordsworth was principal conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra and now bears the title of Conductor Laureate. From 1990 to 1995 Wordsworth was music director of the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden and took over this post again from 2007; 2005 to 2008 he was also music director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet. Since 1989 he has been chief conductor of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra.

In Wordsworth's discography can be found next to the standard repertoire a large amount of British music of the 20th century, as well as operetta and musicals. In 1993 he conducted the Last Night of the Proms in an exclusively British music comprehensive program. His collaboration with the New Queen's Hall Orchestra, with whom he recorded orchestral works by Wagner in performance style around 1900, remained without far-reaching consequences.
