Bârsana

Bârsana old spelling Bîrsana [ bɨrsana ] (Hungarian Barcánfalva ) is a town in Maramureş County in Romania.

Location

Barsana is located about 18 km southeast of the city Sighetu Marmaţiei in the valley of the river Iza.

Structure

Apart from the actual place Bârsana belongs to the municipality nor the westernmost village Nanesti. The village also formerly managed by Bârsana from Onceşti forms since 2004 a separate municipality.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1326 as " terram Zurduky " documentary. He was for several centuries part of the county of Maramures and thus of the Kingdom of Hungary. After the First World War he came to Romania.

Population

Since the official Census in 1850, the community was predominantly inhabited by Romanians. Until the Second World War, Jews the largest minority ( 10-15 percent). Meanwhile, the residents of Barsana are almost exclusively Romanians; 2002 were recorded in the whole church four Hungary and six Ukrainians. In the village itself Bârsana lived 4270 inhabitants in 2002. The same applies to several incorporated place Nanesti who scored 2002 533 inhabitants.

Traffic

Barsana is located on the county road 186 that leads from Vadu Izei after SACEL and thus the cities Sighetu Marmaţiei and Borsa together. Regular bus services in these cities. The nearest train station is located about 13 km north-east of the village on the railway line Valea Viseului - Borsa.

Attractions

Apart from the scenic attractive location is main tourist attraction Built in 1720, the wooden church " Intrarea Maicii Domnului în biserica " in the center of Barsana. In 1999, she was one of eight wooden churches in the Maramureş, which was inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

The monastery Mănăstirea Bârsana located on the southeastern outskirts of the village was first mentioned in 1390, but abandoned and demolished in 1800. Today's on-site facilities buildings were built in the traditional wood construction since 1993. Today they are used as Romanian Orthodox nunnery.
