Bart Bok

Bartholomew "Bart " January Bok ( born April 28, 1906 in Hoorn, † August 5, 1983 in Tucson, Arizona) was a born in the Netherlands American astronomer.

He is known for his work on the structure and evolution of the Milky Way as well as the study of the globules.

Bok studied at the Universities of Leiden and Groningen (Ph. D. 1932). He spent his long academic career at Harvard University ( 1929-57 ), Australian National University ( 1957-66 ) and the University of Arizona ( 1966-74 ). In 1938 he became an American citizen. From 1957 to 1966 he was Director of the Mount Stromlo Observatory in Australia and 1966 to 1970 of the Steward Observatory in Arizona.

Bok was 1970-1976 Vice - President of the International Astronomical Union and from 1972 to 1974 president of the American Astronomical Society.

In addition, Bok was members of the Skeptics Society, a society for the promotion of scientific and skeptical thinking.
