Bartholomaeus Arnoldi

Bartholomew Arnoldi (* um 1465 in Usingen, † September 9, 1532 in Erfurt) was a professor of philosophy and theology, and first a teacher and friend, later an opponent of Luther. Due to his birthplace he carried the nickname Usingensis or de Usingen.

Biography

Arnoldi studied at the University of Erfurt, first philosophy, was Master in 1491 and soon afterwards professor of philosophy, in which capacity he also Martin Luther taught. 1512 he joined under the influence of Luther in the Augustinian order. Later he also taught theology also, after he had acquired in 1514 a doctorate in theology.

Arnoldi held with Luther to 1518 friendship, but then he opposed vehemently the introduction of the Reformation in Erfurt and on the other hand wrote a number of violent polemics. In 1526 he went to Würzburg and was present, accompanied by the Bishop of Würzburg Conrad II of Thiingen 1530 at the Diet of Augsburg. Then he returned to Erfurt, where he died in old age.

Arnoldi is significant in the history of logic. He wrote a "Compendium of logic " and " Exercitia the Aristotelian Organon " and is considered a representative of nominalism.
