Bartica

Region

Bartica is a city in the Cuyuni - Mazaruni region in Guyana. It lies on the left bank of the Essequibo at the confluence of Cuyuni and Mazaruni with the Essequibo. Thus, the city became an important gateway into the interior. The city was created by a settlement of Anglican missionaries in 1842, which was already a few years later boast about 30 homes and a church. The name Bartica means red earth.

The town has two secondary and three primary schools, in the resort can be found also a hospital. In the north of the village there are ruins of an old Dutch fort Kyk - Over-All. At each Easter weekend there will be a race with other sporting events such as cricket, boxing and football in Bartica. There is also a street parade and the Miss Bartica Regatta. In August there is another regatta.

Massacre

On 17 February 2008 Bartica was attacked by a gang of Rondell Rawlins. Twelve people, including three police officers were shot. Many shops were looted.
