Bartolomeo Veneto

Bartolomeo Veneto, also Bartolomeo da Venezia, (* probably around 1480, first reference April 9, 1502, last mention 1530), was an Italian painter of the High Renaissance.

Life

Bartolomeo Veneto was primarily involved in Veneto and Lombardy. About its origin, one can only speculate. On his earliest known, dated on April 9, 1502 picture, a Virgin and Child, he called himself " bartolamio mezo venezian e mezo cremonexe ", ie half as Venetians and half as Cremona. This suggests that it could have come from the Cremonese space policy. However, there are also suspicions that he was actually from the bergameslischen space or has there learned his craft as a portraitist. Reason for this assumption is the fact that Bartolomeo Veneto has created an extraordinary number of decorative portraits of high quality, an art movement in which artists from Bergamo just had created excellent. The earliest Preserved images Bartolomeo however are predominantly religious character and show the unmistakable influence of the Venetian school. Early on, he comes under the influence of Giovanni Bellini, whose picture he took over construction schemes and whose compositions he nachmalte partially. On a panel of the Madonna of 1509 he describes himself as a pupil of Gentile Bellini. So it is no surprise that some of his early works have long been regarded as handwritten works of Bellini brothers. In addition to Bellini but he was also inspired by Antonello da Messina. But Nordic artists, particularly Albrecht Dürer and Lucas van Leyden influenced him long term. Probably belonged to that group of Bartolomeo Venetian artists such as Jacopo de ' Barbari, Marco Marziale and Benedetto Diana, who received the marketed by Dürer to Venice innovations inspired and transpose in their works. Despite all these influences is noticeable that Bartolomeo held in some ways also to long-outdated notions, so reminiscent of the hardness he painted very contours of the style of Alvise Vivarini. Only later, after a stay in Ferrara and Milan, he took over the soft, round Übergänger the Lombard painting and approached notably, Leonardo da Vinci.

Bartolomeo Veneto needs, especially as a portraitist, who enjoyed an excellent national and international reputation, for he was awarded numerous contracts of this kind. Some particularly close contacts seem to have existed at Ferrara, for he received in 1516, among others, the contract for the San Antonio Convention in Polesine at Ferrara, now lost portrait of San Contardo d'Este to paint. Later, a portrait of the monastery founder Beata Beatrice d' Este followed. For this reason, turned Venturi 1899, the thesis that Bartolomeo Veneto would be identical with the same name, 1505-1508 proven in the court of Lucrezia Borgia painter. But this assumption is now considered obsolete, as it has now found a document that those already mentioned for the year 1473, so he was a bit older than the here discussed Bartolomeo.

In addition to visits to Ferrara and Milan Bartolomeo bored even in other cultural strongholds of Italy. Especially in the area of Padua, he seems to show how different works to have been living for a long time. It is clear that Bartolomeo further and further from the Venetian conception of art. While the Norse influences predominate in the first years of his absence from Venice in his pictures, it is the later of the Leonardo school. In particular, Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio and Bernardino Luini seem to have influenced him. Presumably, by Francesco Francia, he was familiar with the work of Raphael. Nevertheless, his contacts to Venice seem not to be canceled entirely, because in the late works one finds quite also reminiscent of the works of Giorgione, Titian and Lorenzo Lotto. In his last years, also show knowledge of painting by Moretto da Brescia Brescia particular and Giovanni Savoldo. Bartolomeo began experimenting reinforced with light and shadow.

Against 1530/31 he seems to have died. By a document is known that in 1531 a Bartolomeo Veneto died in Turin. So far, however, can not be proven whether this is the painter discussed here. In any case, the Piedmontese school left no reference points in his last pictures.

Work

Bartolomeo Veneto painted almost exclusively portraits and religious images. Like almost any other artist of his time, he was able to combine the influences of the Nordic and the various Italian schools together. Bartolomeo is characterized by a high conception of reality and a careful attention to detail. His portraits include with their imaginative costumes and jewelry items to the best of what he has painted.
