Bartolomeu Anania

Bartolomeu Anania (* Valeriu Anania as on 18 March 1921 in Glăvile, Vâlcea county, † January 31, 2011 in Cluj) was a Romanian writer and Romanian Orthodox clergyman. He was from 1993 until his death, Archbishop and Metropolitan.

Life

Anania visited the Central Theological Seminary in Bucharest from 1933 until 1941. On 2 February 1942, he received the Bucharest Antim Monastery, the monk ordination and was given the religious name of Bartolomeu. On March 15, 1942, ordained a deacon - monk was. He then worked in the monasteries Polovragi and Baia de Aries.

1944 took Anania on to study medicine at the Medical Faculty of Cluj and enrolled at the Academy of Music Gheorghe Dima. Because of the organization of protests against the government of Petru Groza on March 6, 1946, he was expelled before completing his studies.

He then continued his theology studies at the University of Bucharest, at the Academy Andreiana of Cluj and Sibiu at Orthodox seminaries. In 1948 he was awarded his doctorate for a licentiate in theology.

Already in the year earlier, in 1947, Anania had become abbot of the monastery Toplita in Harghita Kr. Then held Anania different offices. In 1958 he was arrested because of his contacts with the legionary movement " against the social order" and sentenced to 25 years in prison. In 1964 he was released and was able to emigrate to the United States. There he held several positions in the U.S. Romanian Orthodox Church. 1967 was ordained a priest and appointed Archimandrite. From 1976 to 1982 he was director of the Institute of Biblical Studies and Mission of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Bucharest. From 1982 he worked as a writer in Văratec monastery, especially his translation of the Bible was recognized.

Bartolomeu Anania was elected to succeed Teofil Herineanu by the Holy Synod on 21 January 1993 to the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Vad, Feleac and Cluj. He received his episcopal consecration in the Cathedral of Cluj on January 7, 1993, the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, Teoctist I. After the death of Antonie Plămădeală in 2005 he became Metropolitan of Transylvania.

2006 he was appointed Metropolitan of Cluj ( Kolozsvár ), Alba ( Charles Castle), Crişana ( Kreischgau ) and Maramureş; covers the areas of the circles Alba, Bihor, Bistrita-Nasaud, Cluj, Maramureş, Mureş, Satu Mare and Salaj. In 2007, he was the main rival in the election of Daniel Ciobotea Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

His numerous works include a variety of literary works. He was a member of the Writers' Union of Romania, whose annual prize he received in 1982.

The funeral of Bartolomeu Anania was on February 3, 2011 in the Orthodox Cathedral of Cluj, under the leadership of Patriarch Daniel Ciobotea instead.

Work

Bartolomeu Anania was considered a controversial figure of the Romanian Orthodox Church. In the 1940/50er years he was imprisoned for his contacts with the fascist legionaries movement ( Mişcarea Legionară ) of the Iron Guard and sentenced to 25 years hard labor, of which he served six years. In 2008 he was unmasked as an informer under the code name Apostol of Romania's Securitate secret by the Securitate education authority CNSAS ( Consiliul Naţional pentru Studierea Arhivelor Securităţii ). In the church, he was considered since 1990 as a reformer.
