Bas Jan Ader

Bas Jan Ader (actually Bastiaan Johan Christiaan Ader ) ( born April 19, 1942 in Winschoten, The Netherlands, † Atlantic Ocean, 1975) was a Dutch video and conceptual artist who has left a very small but influential oeuvre.

Life and work

Childhood

Vein grew up as one of two sons of the preacher Bastiaan Jan Ader and Johanna Adriana Core Apeldoorn in the Dutch Winschoten. His father was just like his mother in the Dutch resistance and was killed in 1944 by the German occupation forces. Artery, just 2 years old, and his brother were then raised by her mother alone.

Artistic training and career

January Bas Ader attended several courses at the Institute of Applied Arts in Amsterdam, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie today. He was considered a rebellious student and graduated from there not (Narrated spreader is an announcement that he was only a piece of paper for a whole semester need, because he wanted to erase any drawing immediately after completion again). 1971 worked vein in Zeeland- West Chapel. Through various detours, a shipwreck on the coast of California and some adventurous sea voyages reached vein finally to Los Angeles, where he studied at the Otis Art Institute in the sixties. There he met Mary Sue Andersen, the daughter of the director know, and married her in Las Vegas. During the ceremony he went, symbolically supported on crutches. Plant Development

In his artistic work, it went wire again and again to come to terms with gravity or other physical phenomena. He used it besides the actual action that he always pointed out, himself the moment the enduring implementation in the media of photography and film. His video works (originally 16mm or Super 8 movies) are usually only a few minutes long sequences where he showed different types of falling or tipping. One of them, titled " Broken Fall (Organic ) " shows the artist in the Amsterdam Forest. Core lurches on the branch of a tree until he finally falls into the underlying moat. Another film shows him on a roof. He sits on a chair and wobbles on the roof slope until it tumbles. In a film from the year 1971, he holds a heavy stone for so long in hand, as he can. At the moment in which the stone falls, it deletes the lamps located on the floor, and so terminates the short movie. In another short film ( 3:21 min ), entitled "I'm too sad to tell you " cries vein without ceasing before the camera without speaking.

Last voyage

In 1975 January Bas tried vein with a very small sailboat ( a converted Guppy 13) an artistically motivated, performative Atlantic crossing with the title "In search of the miraculous ( songs for north Atlantic ) ." About 10 months after his departure, the empty boat off the coast of Ireland was driven. January Bas Ader's body was never found. The end of his life is reminiscent of the final journey of the Dadaist artist Arthur Cravan, which was lost off the coast of Mexico with his sailboat.

Aftermath

Ader's not very extensive estate is spread all over the world. There is no central collection of his works. Lately, however, shows the strong influence of the Dutch on the current art. Since 2000, retrospectives of his work.
