Basa (Sudan)

Basa - also Jabal Basa - is a village in Sudan. It is located 250 km northeast of Khartoum removed in the Butanasteppe, upstream of the Wadi Hawa, which opens at Meroe in the Nile.

Temple of Basa

Nearby is a now completely decayed temple, which was built under Amanichabale and was probably dedicated to the Lion God Apedemak. The temple was excavated in 1907 and set to measure.

Before the temple several fallen lion sculptures lying around, each of them two tons. Of these, 1970 were the six best-preserved salvaged and placed in front of the entrance to the National Museum of Sudan. Were also found during salvage operations at a nearby Hafir two sixty centimeters high frog sculptures that you also took to Khartoum. You are now at the edge of the lake in the Museum Garden of the National Museum.
