Basal area

The basal area (also short base and formerly often called circular area ) is an important factor in the forestry yield science. It results from the summation of the base areas of all individual trees per hectare and is expressed in m² / ha. The base of individual trees corresponds to the circular surface of the stem cross section at breast height (1.30 m).

The footprint is a measure of the density of the stock. It is usually determined randomly using the Winkelzählprobe.
