Basarab I of Wallachia

Basarab I. Întemeietorul ( German Basarab the Founder; unknown *, † 1352) was a Wallachian Voivode and is considered the founder of the Principality of Wallachia and the first Romanian dynasty. He is also also the namesake of the historic landscape Bessarabia.

Life

The political crisis that started after the extinction of the dynasty of Árpád (1301 ) in the Kingdom of Hungary, Basarab I used to unite the various political units that had passed south of the Carpathians until then in the country under his rule. The thus formed Principality of Wallachia submitted soon to the Danube and the Black Sea. The endeavor Basarab I. to solve its sphere of Hungarian sovereignty, eventually led to a 1330 campaign in Hungary, which had the aim of restoring the Hungarian suzerainty over Wallachia.
