Base (geometry)

The term base refers to a certain boundary surface of a three-dimensional body or (usually limited ) space. In graphic representations, or three-dimensional models, this area is always regarded as " downward ", that is, as the surface on which the body "stands". Therefore, base surfaces are mostly flat.

Due to their symmetry, any side surface can be considered as the base for the Platonic solids.

Examples of bases in geometry

  • The base of a parallelepiped is a rectangle.
  • The base of a pyramid is a polygon.
  • The base surface of a cylinder is a circle or an ellipse.
  • The base of a circular cone is a circle.
