The Basel Institute for Immunology ( BII, and Basel Institute for Immunology ) was one of the most important centers for research in the field of immunology.

1969 decided to start a new research project by the pharmaceutical company Hoffmann -La Roche. Under the leadership of Niels K. Jerne, the Institute was opened in 1971. Roche presented without any special conditions 24 million a year available. About 500 scientists conducted research at the institute, of whom received 27 major awards (3 Nobel Prizes for Georges Köhler, Niels Kaj Jerne and Susumu Tonegawa ).

2000, the Institute was dissolved and replaced by a Center for Medical Genomics.
