Lines

Operational concept

Due to various factors, the timing sequence of the five S -Bahn lines is not uniform. To run lines with large passenger volumes throughout every half hour, such as the S 1 between Basel SBB and stone Sackingen, as well as the S 3 between Olten and running). Lines with moderate ridership as the S 5 and S 6 ) run every hour, which is partially condensed into a half hour, lines with low passenger traffic, such as the S 3 between running and Porrentruy and S 9 hourly. Due to the tri-national location, the offer but depends not only on the demand, but also by the purchasers.

On two sections created by the superposition of two lines a quarter -hour. This additional trains or longer compositions are used on most routes between Basel SBB and Pratteln by the S 1 and the Ostast the S 3, and between Lörrach -Stetten and stones by the S 5 and S 6 During peak times.

Lines

  • S 1: Mulhouse ( F ) - Basel SBB - Rheinfelden - Stone Säckingen - Frick / running Castle
  • S 3: Porrentruy - Delémont - Running - Basel SBB - Liestal - Sissach - Olten
  • S 5: Weil am Rhein ( D) - Lörrach ( D) - stones ( D ) (- Schopfheim ( D))
  • S 6: Basel SBB - Basel Bad Bf - Riehen - Lörrach - stones - Schopfheim - cell in the meadow valley
  • S 9: Sissach - Läufelfingen - Olten

The S 3 and S 9 operate exclusively in Switzerland, the S 1 between Switzerland and France, the S 6 between Switzerland and Germany and the S 5 exclusively in Germany.

The extended regional transport the Basel region also include:

  • RB, regional train (formerly S7): Basel Bad Bf - Waldshut
  • RE, Regional Express (formerly S4): (Basel SBB - ) Basel Bad Bf - Offenburg
  • WB, Waldenburgerbahn: Liestal - Waldenburg

Nachtnetz

On 19 December 2008, the expanded TNW - night network went into operation. The night network that was previously in limited form, is made up of night buses and trams night for the first time and night - suburban trains, which run each weekend during the nights in the Basel area. The Night-S -Bahn lines help to distinguish the actual S- Bahn network SN- line numbers. Currently run two S -Bahn lines, three tram lines and 25 bus routes in the nighttime network; most of the lines at least every hour.

To use the network to a driving night no additional night surcharge is no longer required. This was abolished on the timetable change in December 2011.

  • SN1 Basel SBB - Rheinfelden - Möhlin ( - Frick - Brugg )
  • SN3 Basel SBB - Running ( - Delémont )

Operator

The Regio -S- Bahn Basel is operated by three companies:

With the exception of a stretch of the Basel Verbindungsbahn the responsibilities depend on the ownership of the respective national railway companies. The Swiss Federal Railways to take over the operation of their own tracks, the SBB GmbH to operate the routes of Deutsche Bahn and the Basel junction line which is owned by SBB and DB, as well as the TER Alsace, which takes over the operation of the routes of the French State Railways.

Tariff and traffic groups

The network of Regio -S- Bahn Basel is spread over different tariff networks. Most train stations or bus stops in Switzerland are in Tarifverbund Northwestern Switzerland ( TNW ). A few belong to Tarifverbund Jura ( CTJU ) or Tarifverbund A-wave (TVA ). In Germany, the stops are mainly in the regions transport system Lörrach ( RVL ). In the extended regional traffic crosses regional express towards Offenburg also the regional transport association Freiburg ( RVF ) and ends in Tarifverbund Ortenau (TGO ), the regional train to Waldshut- Tiengen leads into the forest Shuter Tariff Association ( WTV ).

In border areas, there are also stations and stops, which are located in two tariff associations, so among other things the Badische Bahnhof, Riehen Riehen and low wood (each in the TNW and RVL ).

Between TNW and RVL, there is also a mutual recognition of single tickets valid and multi-trip tickets. This includes the zone 10 of the TNW ( Canton of Basel- City and surrounding suburbs) and the entire RVL area. For international networking provide additional services such as cross-border composite subscriptions or day passes.

History

After a long preparation period in which the by different legal and technical requirements resulting problems could be solved, the operation could be included from 1997. First lines were from 1 June 1997, the S1 Mulhouse - Basel SBB - Frick / running Castle and the S3 Olten - Basel SBB - running. On 24 May 1998, the headways on the S1 was compacted and the S9 Sissach - Läufelfingen - Olten put into operation.

The first track on German territory, the S4 from Basel SBB to Freiburg im Breisgau, went on 6 January 2002. For political and definition related reasons this line is no longer counted in the Regio -S- Bahn Basel. Nevertheless, called the Regional-Express line is part of the expanded regional services of the Basel region.

On 12 December 2004, the S3 was extended to Porrentruy. Lörrach - - stones and S6 Basel Bad Bf - Lörrach - Also on this date, the S5 Weil am Rhein went cell in the meadow valley in operation. As a railway transport company operates there since 15 June 2003, the SBB GmbH, a subsidiary of Swiss Federal Railways.

First major extensions to enhance the Regio -S -Bahn were made to the meadow valley train: New stations in Lörrach and Weil am Rhein, adjusting the retaining edges on the remaining stops, new driving roads in Basel Bad Bf to the Binding of the meadow valley train to Basel SBB to allow.

In September 2005, Stadler Flirt arrived at the Regio -S- Bahn Basel for the first time used. The first two trains ran on the Swiss section of the S1. The first S -Bahn line S6 from October 2005 was operated integrally with FLIRT. The shortest with 13 km line of Regio -S- Bahn Basel consists of two vehicles. During the following months the NPZ the S5 were gradually replaced by eight FLIRT; the integral operation was carried out from 31 March 2006. During the schedule year 2006 was also on the S3, the gradual introduction of flirtation. Until the timetable change on 10 December 2006, the entire rolling stock of S3 was eventually replaced by 20 new EMUs.

At the same time, the S6 was bound to the Basel SBB train station. Since then, most of the trains of the Regional Express end in German railway station. For the Binding larger renovation work in the German railway station were needed on points with which to connect the tracks of the meadow valley train towards Basel SBB (so-called " parent track ").

Since the timetable change in December 2008, this segment of Basel SBB is - Frick / running stronghold of S1 integrally operated by Flirt. On the leg Basel SBB - Mulhouse come due to the delay approval in France continue NPZ used. This requires that travelers need to switch to the respective other trains at the time at the Basel SBB train station.

New stops

Since the introduction of the Regio -S- Bahn Basel in 1997, eleven new stations were built:

  • Bahnhof Basel St. Johann (1997)
  • Because garden city, Because Pfädlistrasse (1999)
  • Lörrach causeway, Lörrach Schiller Street (2004)
  • Bahnhof Basel Three Spitz ( 2006)
  • Lörrach Schwarzwaldstrasse, Schopfheim West ( 2007)
  • Pratteln Salina Raurica, Rheinfelden Augarten, Riehen Low Wood ( 2008)

Planning and Projects

Continue preparations for a further development of the Regio -S -Bahn are among the five cantons purchaser and the SBB in progress. However, large infrastructure measures are necessary for the compaction of today offer towards a quarter of an hour in the core area, the realization of which will require several years. The lack of separation by distance or freight transport represents one of the major operational challenges, because the network the longer pushes the more its capacity limits. By investing an increase in the capacity to be created in the coming years and decades, which is essential for the planned expansion of Regio S-Bahn.

Presented at a media conference on 17 December 2008, the Cantonal Directors of Public Transport before the new design contract for the development of regional S- Bahn Basel. According to this, the Regio -S- Bahn Basel is to be expanded in the medium massive for CHF 540 million. The cantons involved share the total costs of about CHF 5.7 million for the development of further studies and preliminary projects with the SBB.

The main content and the intended destination conditions of the contract are planning:

Rail service

  • Quarter of an hour between Basel and Rheinfelden
  • Quarter of an hour between Basel and Liestal
  • Three S -Bahn connections per hour between Liestal and Gelterkinden
  • Additional express train between Basel and Delémont with stops only in running and Dornach- Arlesheim

Infrastructure

  • Expansion of the railway tracks ( unbundling buildings) in Muttenz and Pratteln
  • New insert tracks in Liestal and Gelterkinden
  • Expansion of various sections in the Laufental on double track

A major problem of the Regio -S -Bahn is the lack of diameter lines through the center and the lack of opening up the city center of Basel. In the long term this should be remedied by the construction of the so-called frog, an underground connection from Basel SBB Basel Bad Bf tunnel with stations in the center. To this end, the Government of the Canton of Basel-Stadt has taken a decision to deepen and verification of that study work in December 2007.

At the political level, the demand for the realization of a stop Allschwil / Basel Morgartenring has been set up in the parliaments of the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft and in Einwohnerrat Allschwil.

Used trains

EMUs RABe 521/ 522 RABe

On most S -Bahn lines low-floor unit trains Stadler run Flirt in the series RABe 521 and / or RABe 522 In contrast to the basic variant of the FLIRT ( RABe 523 ), whose Einsatzbarkeit limited to Switzerland, the variants 521 and 522 designed for cross- border traffic to Germany or France. The two sister series differ in principle only in respect of traction equipment and train control systems for the neighboring countries.

Comments

  • From 30 vehicles RABe 521 Series computationally ten for SBB GmbH are intended for use on the S5/S6, the other twenty for the S3. Technically, the two-system vehicles are identical and are exchanged freely between the lines; Inserts on the Swiss section of S1 are also possible.
  • The planned for 2008 delivery of 12 two-stream vehicles of RABe 522 series for the S1 has now been suspended. Due to the currently applicable certification procedure in France for a design change was necessary RABe 522 were therefore dismantled to RABe 523. For use in France in 2008 a total of 14 revised constructive Flirt were ordered that were delivered from 2011. You should leave from December 2012 to France, but the approval is delayed.

EMUs RBDe 560/ 562 RBDe

Up in September 2005 operated on all lines of the Regio -S- Bahn Basel EMUs type RBDe 560 or 562 RBDe These have since been in several steps with new low-floor trains Stadler Flirt replaced. The integral use of the new trains will be from 7 October 2005 to the S5, since 31 March 2006, the S6, since 10 December 2006 to the S3 and December 14, 2008 at the Swiss section of the S1.

The EMUs RBDe 560 come on a partial section of the S1 ( once in the morning Basel - Running castle and back, evening Basel - Stone - Säckingen - Basel) regularly used. In addition comes a NPZ - Composition once each morning and evening on the S3 is used.
