Breeding history

The Bashkir is the horse of the Bashkirs. It occurs in the steppes north of the Black and the Caspian Sea and west of the Volga. Since 1845 they are also bred in studs. In today's time to breed them in a stud in the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Ufa. Originally, the Bashkir also for milk and meat production, as well as bred load, train and mount. The mare's milk is fermented by the locals to Kumys, the special healing powers are attributed. As a workhorse, especially the pulling loads over long distances is the strength of the Bashkirs, a team should be able to pull a sled in 24 Hours 120 to 140 km without supplementation. Since the animals due to the engine no longer be needed as work animals, the Bashkir in Russia is grown to a great extent on milk yield. Due to strong selection has succeeded in milk yield up to 2,700 liters in an 8 - to increase to 9 -month lactation period. Remarkably, this is mainly because of mare udder just holds two liters of milk and the animals therefore - even at night - every two hours must be milked. The foals are To achieve this yield for the day completely separated from the mares and to prevent disadvantages in the development, supply, among others, skimmed cow's milk.

In the U.S., there are curly horses: the American Bashkir Curly horses. They form a separate breed. Animal hair allergy sufferers react to the curly fur considerably less than the normal horse hair, which makes the animals are often highly sought after. This fact has been medically proven by a study at the University Hospital Aachen.
