Basil McRae

Basil McRae Paul ( born January 5, 1961 in Beaverton, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who during his active career, among others, for the Quebec Nordiques, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota North Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks played in the National Hockey League. His brother Chris also played in the NHL. McRae was known throughout his career as an enforcer.

Career

McRae began his professional career at a young age with the London Knights, for which he was on the ice from 1978 to 1981. During this time, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1980 in the fifth round at position 87 of the Quebec Nordiques. During the season 1981/82 he came to his first stakes in the National Hockey League and scored seven points in 20 games. In the following season, McRae was used in the NHL, but the bulk of the playing time he spent at Fredericton Express of the American Hockey League. On August 12, 1983, he was transferred in exchange for Richard Turmel to the Toronto Maple Leafs. There he came in the following two seasons on only four point loose inserts in the NHL, while he counted with the St. Catharines Saints in the AHL to the regular forces.

In July 1985, he signed as a free agent contract with the Detroit Red Wings. However, in the 1985/86 season he played mostly in the farm team, the Adirondack Red Wings, with whom he regularly appeared as a scorer in appearance and 360 penalty minutes in 86 games collected. In addition, he won with Adirondack in this game year the Calder Cup. In January 1987 he was transferred back to the Nordiques, of which he had been selected in 1980 NHL Entry Draft. McRae was only about six months in Quebec and then signed a contract with the Minnesota North Stars. He became there a crowd favorite and filled his tasks as Enforcer, four seasons in Serie he sat over 300 minutes in the penalty box. When NHL Expansion Draft 1992, he was selected by the newly formed franchise Tampa Bay Lightning.

After 14 games, his commitment was already finished and McRae was given to the St. Louis Blues. After more than three years, even his expiring contract was not renewed. In October 1996, McRae decided his career with the Chicago Blackhawks continue, for which he still graduated eight NHL games, and after ended his active career.
