Basilica of Saint Mary (Minneapolis)

The Basilica of Saint Mary is a basilica in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, the St. Paul Cathedral in Saint Paul.

At the beginning of the 20th century came in the rapidly growing city of Minneapolis on the desire to build a new cathedral. Christmas 1903, Archbishop John Ireland before the first plans for the construction, so that the ground-breaking ceremony could take place almost four years later, on August 7, 1907. Architect Emmanuel Louis was Masqueray. After seven years of construction, the first Mass was held in the newly built Cathedral on 31 May 1914. In 1926 she was awarded during a special ceremony with Pope Pius XI. as the first cathedral in the United States the status of a minor basilica and became the Basilica of Saint Mary of Minneapolis. In 1975 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places of the United States.

After water damage had opened in the 1980s, has begun to renovate the cathedral. In addition, the old coupling has been replaced by a new one. 2000 water damage, however, were again found to make what further remedial measures required.

Since 1995, takes place annually the Basilica Block Party, a two-day music festival, held. The revenue from the maintenance of the cathedral and the needy benefit.
