Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel

The Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel ( eng.: Minor Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel ) is a minor basilica of the Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of Lucena in the Philippines. She stands at the General Luna Street in Tayabas City.

History

The first church in Tayabas was created in 1585, it was dedicated to the Archangel Michael and made ​​of wood, with a roof of Nipapalmblättern built. After damage and reconstruction in 1590 it was decided to build a stone church in 1600. This was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1743 and rebuilt a few years later more than before in the present form. Beginning of the 19th century it was provided with the first church bell in Asia. It has a diameter of approximately 1.50 meters, their weights 70 kilograms. The roof structure was originally created from tiles in 1894 reinforced by a more resistant metal substructure. Since 2000 extensive refurbishment work in the church are carried out, their progress is regularly published on the Internet.

Pope John Paul II awarded her on January 21, 1989 the title of minor Basilica.

Importance of the church

The Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel is one of the oldest church building in the territory of the Philippines. It was built in the architectural style of the Rococo of brick and covered with coral stone.
