Basketball at the 2008 Summer Olympics
The XXIX. 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing two competitions were held in basketball. On the men's tournament and the tournament of the women had each twelve teams participate. Each qualified for the tournament country was entitled to a maximum of up a team of twelve players from the total number of 144 participating men and 144 women found in this competition. Both competitions were held at the Wukesong Indoor Stadium, the women from 9 to 23, the proportion of men from 10 to 24 August. The draw for the group was held on 26 April 2008, the final order of the respective games on game was announced on May 25.

Qualification
In addition to the hosts China are the first place winner of the 2006 World Cup, the first place winner of the Africa Cup 2007, the first place winner of the Asian Cup 2007, which moved first and second placed teams from the America Cup 2007, the 2007 ( As Spain was a world champion already qualified first and third place winners of the European Championships, third place after ) as well as the first place winner of the Ozeanienmeisterschaft directly qualified for the Olympics.
The three remaining starting positions were awarded at a final qualification tournament, which to 20 July 2008 took place from 14th in Athens. It was attended by twelve teams, of which the three best qualified for the Olympic competition. The Games were held in the Olympic Hall of Olympic sports complex. At this final qualifying tournament following teams participated:

- Two from Asia ( Asia championship 2007): Lebanon Lebanon ( 2 ), Flag of South Korea South Korea ( 3 )
- One of Oceania ( Ozeanienmeisterschaft 2007): New Zealand New Zealand ( 2 )
After the group matches in four groups and the final tournament with eight teams, the top three teams have qualified for the Olympic competition (shown in italics).
For the Olympic competition thus following teams have qualified:

- Australia (as the Oceania )
- People's Republic of China People's Republic of China ( as host )
- Germany Germany ( through the qualifying tournament )
- Greece Greece ( through the qualifying tournament, not as Vice World Champion )
- Iran Iran (as Asian champions )
- Croatia Croatia ( through qualifying tournament )
- Lithuania Lithuania ( 3 out of the European Championship since Spain already qualified )

- Spain ( as the World Champion and Vice - European Champion )

Qualification
In addition to the People's Republic of China, the host, the winners of the 2006 World Cup, the Africa Cup 2007, Asia Cup 2007, the America Cup 2007, the 2007 European Championship, as well as the Ozeanienmeisterschaft are directly qualified for the Olympic tournament. The remaining five starting places were awarded in a final qualifying tournament, which took place from 9 to 15 June 2008. It was attended by the following twelve teams, of which the five best qualified for the Olympic competition:
- Four of Europe: Spain, Belarus Belarus, Latvia Latvia, Czech Republic Czech Republic
- Three of America: Cuba, Brazil, Brazil, Argentina, Argentina
- Two of Africa: Senegal Senegal, Angola
- Two from Asia: Japan, Japan, Chinese Taipei Chinese Taipei
- One of Oceania: Fiji Fiji
The selected teams from Spain, Latvia, Belarus and the Czech Republic have qualified as winners of their quarter-finals. The last remaining place was taken by the Brazilian selection in a discharged as a Final Four Final round of the losers of the quarter-finals.
