Bassano del Grappa
Bassano del Grappa is an Italian town in the province of Vicenza, Veneto with 43 127 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).
Location and History
It lies on the Brenta and at an altitude of 129 m above sea level. Sea level and has an area of 46 km ². Archaeological findings show a settlement from the 2nd century. In the year 998 a castle and a parish church sources are mentioned. From 1175 the town belonged to Vicenza, then also at Padua until it came under Venetian rule in 1404. After the damage caused by Napoleon's campaigns, political upheavals in northern Italy and changing affiliations Bassano finally came in 1866 with Italy.
Tourist interest are the numerous grappa distilleries. The town's name has nothing to do with the grape marc, but comes from the neighboring mountain Monte Grappa, which was the scene of heavy fighting during the First World War.
