Bassas da India is located in the southern Mozambique Channel an uninhabited atoll in the Indian Ocean, west of Madagascar.

Politics and Administration

The atoll belongs since 1897 to France. Like the other Îles Éparses it has been managed since 2005 by the prefect and top managers of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands and heard since February 21, 2007 administratively to the French Southern and Antarctic Territories. Before that, it had been administered by the prefect of the overseas department of Réunion since 1960 without belonging even to Réunion.

Geography

The atoll has a diameter of about 10 km and consists of several ( about ten) smallest islands of volcanic rocks with a total land area of ​​0.2 km ². It is surrounded by coral reefs which are submerged at high tide.
