Bassel Khartabil

Bassel Khartabil ( Arabic باسل خرطبيل ), Bassel Safadi also, (born 22 May 1981) is a Syrian software developer known for his significant contributions to open source software and free culture. On 15 March 2012, he was detained by the Syrian government in Damascus.

After his arrest was announced in July 2012, a group of supporters and personalities launched a global campaign for his immediate release, which was picked up by international media such as Al Jazeera.

Khartabil wanted to marry in April 2012.

In the 2012 list of Top Global Thinkers declared " Foreign Policy " Bassel along with Rima Dali as someone who " insists, against all odds on a peaceful Syrian revolution" ( " insisting, against all odds, on a peaceful Syrian revolution. ").
