Basslink (English Basslink HVDC Interconnector ) is a high -voltage direct current transmission line (HVDC ) through the Bass Strait between the south-eastern Australia and Tasmania.

The total of 374.7 km long line is the first and only designed as a submarine electric cable between the two territories. 290 km are designed as submarine cables. The line running north from the located in the Australian state of Victoria converter station next to the Loy Yang power station near the town of Traralgon by the Bass Strait and ends in Tasmania in the city of Georgetown. In addition to the electrical energy transfer, the high-voltage cable with an additional optical fiber is used for data transmission.

The line was built in the years 2003 to 2005. She was at the opening of the longest submarine cables for electric power transmission and was surpassed by the NorNed opened in 2008. The Basslink has been officially put into operation on 29 April 2006. The continuous power which can be transmitted either from Tasmania to Australia or from Australia to Tasmania, is 500 MW. Briefly, for a few hours and at low outside temperatures, the performance can be increased to a maximum of 630 MW. The line connects the in Tasmania operated at 220 kV three-phase power network with the Australian electricity grid, which is operated at 500 kV. The system is designed technically and monopolar HVDC for a DC voltage of 400 kV and uses the ground as a return conductor. Manufacturer of the converter stations is the Siemens AG.

The data connection via Basslink was commissioned in 2009 and its purpose is for Internet connections and the data- regular connectivity of Tasmania.
