Channeling Bastau in the urban area Minden

The Bastau is a 19.2 km long, orographic left or western tributary of the Weser at Minden- Lübbecke in East Westphalia, North Rhine -Westphalia.

Geography

The small river has no definite source, the source area is found in Luebbecke - Nettelstedt.

The Bastau flows on the southern edge of the nature reserve "Big peat bog ", between the bog and the Wiehengebirge parallel to the highway 65 and the Midland Canal from west to east. Your water comes from small streams that originate in the Wiehengebirge, and drainage ditches of the bog. In this area the Bastau part of the nature reserve " Bastauniederung " and is placed under protection since 1988. This owes mainly by those ausgetorften wet meadows that harbor rare plants and a bird refuge are.

After the reserve " Bastauniederung " reaches the river in Minden- Rodenbeck the urban area. From here to the mouth of the Weser in Minden small river is a -natural -developed, strong begradigtes watercourses. In the summer it tends to excessive weeds. Chance comes before a rich stock of fish.

In the city it is piped over a distance of about 150 m, then flows through the park " Glacis ", where part of the creek water feeds the Swan Pond, and flows behind an overflow weir in the river Weser.

The mouth of the Bastau is considered a possible origin of the name of the city of Minden.

History

The Bastau drained the swampy lowlands of Hiller Moor to the north of the Porta Westfalica where they originally near the village Barkhausen had their original mouth of the Weser. 1280 the river was laid, the Bastau now flowed to the town of Minden, to fill the moat. So it was used until 1904. The river flowed through the city and drove there also numerous water mills. The Bastau then culminated at the watering hole at the Schlagde in Minden the river Weser. There is still an old bricked mouth hole in the former city wall. With the shift in the glacis and the confluence with the Weser above the town of Minden, a dam was built, which is to ensure the water retention in the parks ( Swan Pond). The Minden- Luebbecke has had to create a so-called localization approach for Bastau. Thus, the weir must disappear or be made passable for fish. The town of Minden 2012 has started planning to the implementation will take place 2013/14.
