Bathurst Harbour, Tasmania

The Bathurst Harbour is a bay in the south-west of the Australian state of Tasmania.

Location

The natural bay located on the west coast and the south coast of the island approximately 20 km inland. With the west, on the coast, nearby Port Davey, and thus with the open sea of the Bathurst Harbour is connected through a natural channel. From the north empty into the Bay of Old River and the North River, south of the River Ray. Add the channel to the Port Davey flows from the north of the Spring River.

Due to its location far in the interior of Bathurst Harbour is well protected from the swell of the Roaring Forties.

Colonization and access

The Bathurst Harbour lies entirely in the South West National Park. Except for a few hermit there are no human settlements. South of the bay, at the end of a 6 km long fjord, is the Malaleuca Ranger Office & Bird Observatory, a base for National Park Ranger and a bird observatory.

There are no roads in this area, but the long distance footpath Port Davey Track crosses the Bathurst Harbour and leads to the ranger station. For the crossing of the bay rowboats are available. About the long-distance footpath, the southern shore of Lake Pedder and east of the Huon River and the South East Cape are accessible by the north.
