Battalions of Fear is the first album of the German speed and power metal band Blind Guardian.

Formation

After the two demo recordings Symphonies of Doom and Battalions of Fear under the name Lucifer's Heritage began after the name change to Blind Guardian and several changes in band members, who work on their debut album. It was recorded in October and November 1987 in the Karo Studios in Münster with producer Kalle Trapp and published in 1988.

All songs were composed by guitarist André Olbrich and texted and have already been published on the first demo of the band. Among the new songs are just part of Guardian of the Blind, and The Martyr By the Gates of Moria. Wizard's Crown is a new version of the song from the Halloween Symphonies of Doom demo, the rest comes from the Battalions of Fear demo. All songs were re-recorded, however.

The songs, however, disappeared after releasing their second album quite quickly from the live program of the band; only Majesty was played later on a regular basis and can also be heard on the live album Tokyo Tales in 1993.

Style

From the album style is raw speed metal songs that even the thrash metal can be assigned partially. As such, the songs all have a pretty fast pace, which is rarely interrupted and is mainly characterized by riffs and melodic sections. In the song, By the Gates of Moria is finally the theme of the 9th Symphony cited " From the New World " by Antonín Dvořák. Another quote the intro can be considered for Majesty, in which an ajar to the waltz On the Beautiful Blue Danube by Johann Strauss ( son ) melody is played in the sound of a barrel organ.

The lyrics are in the typical style of the band and refer to different topics. The songs Majesty, By the Gates of Moria and the CD bonus Gandalf 's Rebirth relating to JRR Tolkien's work The Lord of the Rings. The Martyr is about the suffering of Jesus and Guardian of the Blind novel deals with Stephen King's It. With Trial by the Archon, By the Gates of Moria and Gandalf 's Rebirth are three instrumental songs on the album.

Re-release 2007

In 2007, the album was re-released. The album was remastered by Charlie Bauerfeind and equipped with the Symphonies of Doom demo. In addition, the new version contains all the lyrics of the album. These were previously published only in the vinyl version of the album and on a rare CD pressing of No Remorse Records.
