Battle's sign

The Battle mark ( Battle 's sign ) is a behind the ear ( retroauricular ) occurring hematoma (specifically, ecchymosis ).

Description

The Battle character indicates a fracture ( break) of the skull base, especially on a fracture of the temporal bone. In addition to the hematoma is in emergency medicine an important indication of the presence of a craniocerebral trauma. It is caused by an injury of the posterior ear artery ( posterior auricular artery ) and a consequent leakage of blood from this artery.

Was first described in 1890 by the Battle - character English surgeon William Henry Battle ( 1855-1936 ).
